Need to jazz up your social media accounts with some epic photos? Well, you can always snap pictures of your cat or you could go on a road trip and have some sweet memories to last a lifetime, and as an added bonus, your Instagram account will not look the same again! You don’t have to be a photographer to get good photos, all you need is a few simple tips, and we have them for you. Interested? Let’s get started!
Go for the Bigger Picture
Worried about getting your motorcycle helmet in the frame? Don’t be! Actually, we insist that you get the helmet into the shot because it gives that ‘adventurer’ vibe which has a definite charm that you can’t get when you are touring in a car! Every picture must capture the bigger, ‘behind the scenes’ story which creates intrigue and makes for a great social media photo. To capture a wider scene, you can use a 23mm or 27mm lens with your camera. But, as we are going to point out a little later, the equipment is not as important as your imagination!
Also, don’t just have human faces in all of your photos. You can park your two-wheeler at a beautiful place and capture the landscape, or snap a glimpse of the local way of life.
Plan for the Shots
Continuing from our previous point of having different things in your photos, make sure to get a variety of subjects for the photos. In some you can have a selfie with your helmet and goggles, in some you can get the landscape on your rear-view mirror, in some other snaps you can just capture the rising sun or wildlife. What makes touring photography unique is that it does not show the same things you would see in a city. It shows the fleeting moments of life that you pine for when you are bored of the normal home-to-work routine. Even a wild flower growing by the road can capture that essence, you just need to plan for unique glimpses.
One important thing about planning the shots during motorcycle trips is to plan your personal safety first! Don’t get rolling shots, or remove your helmet for a selfie when you are riding. Also, don’t stop in the middle of bridges or busy roads.
Don’t Worry About the Camera
Some wise photographer once said that the best camera is the one that you have with you! So, don’t worry about buying an expensive camera just for your trip. Mobile cameras have come a long way and while they can’t still beat the colour science and quality of images, it is more than plenty for your social media pages. However, if you are in the market for an awesome camera that gets you professional image quality, check out the mirrorless cameras by Fujifilm and Canon. For an action camera, you can explore Osmo and GoPro. If you are a camera-lover and have some money to spend, check Leica and Hasselblad cameras, but mind you, these are expensive as a brand-new motorcycle!
When You Enjoy the Trip, It Shows!
Don’t get stuck in peeping through the viewfinder to get photos! The key to having good images is to enjoy your time on the trip. And the only way you can enjoy it is when you get wholeheartedly into the journey. Often people miss out on living the moment in the chase for capturing the moment! Remember you do a motorcycle road trip to enjoy the freedom of the experience, the good photographs are just a happy byproduct!
Get Out of Your Comfort Zone, Get A Little Adventurous
Now this is a special tip, and we really advise you to get adventurous on your trip only if you have someone with you whom you trust. Don’t deviate from your planned route if you are riding solo, or time is of essence. Great experiences happen when you leave the beaten track and find something new to explore. Having said that, getting adventurous does not, under any circumstances, mean not using a bike helmet, or riding very fast. It's a good idea to get out of your comfort zone, not out of your motorcycle helmet!
